Foldes was a pupil of Bartok and crusader for Hungarian music throughout a long and distinguished career: his 1957 recordings for DG were clearly a labour of love. His own transcriptions from Hary Janos are zesty and idiomatic, his Dances of Marosszek (banded on the current CD as a single track) is second to none for virtuosity and power, and the remaining shorter pieces are all spot on. One soon gets used to the primitive mono sound; less quickly the 44-minute playing time. …
