The Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau (1903- 1991) gives operatic scope to Mozart’s solo music on this recording, digging into a sometimes recalcitrant Baldwin piano for maximum emotional expression. The recital takes over 90 minutes, to the point where the experience of hearing all that Mozart in a single setting begins to get a bit much. The veteran pianist misses the occasional note, although not as many as in his unhappy live rendition of Mozart’s Sonata No 8 K 310 for Canadian TV on 5 March 1964, available on YouTube. …
