Piano International (Mar, 2013)
Delicate washes of sound and secrecy inform the piano music of Barcelona-born Frederico Mompou (1893-1987). Even in the relatively few passages of fast music in his output, one senses that the composer’s wish is to speak directly from his heart to ours. If the music is economical, it is never sparse; rather, it is imbued with generous expression and inviting chords. And if the music takes its time (the markings tend to be Moderato, Lento, Andante, Largo), the effect is never mundane or lugubrious. It is rather spiritual, drawing the listener in and then transporting him or her to wherever the imagination is willing to be taken.
