Johan Adam Faber (1692-1759), and the Missa Maria Assumpta, are known by clarinet students for containing one of the first known parts for the instrument, in a dialogue role with voices that was normally reserved for the oboe; hence, perhaps, the slightly odd pairing here. Faber’s not known for much else, just three works, compared to the vast array of Vivaldi compositions, but he comes across with quiet authority here and without undue special pleading for the new instrumental voice. Terra Nova is a musical research collective with a particular interest in forgotten or abandoned repertoire and the period-instrument approach is spot- on, neither academically fussy nor blatantly modernised.
