Now aged 85 and still going strong, Fleisher hit the scene in the fifties like a breath of fresh air, as his studio recordings with George Szell at the time proved. For German radio listeners, he was even freer, his relationship with Cluytens in the Beethoven generating greater tension than with Jochum in the Mozart. Some acid wind playing aside, this is a fascinating and valuable codicil to Sony’s recent round-up of Fleisher’s studio recordings. …
