This attractively packaged 2-CD set celebrates Arvo Part’s 80th birthday, which fell in September 2015. ECM has drawn on its significant back catalogue of Part’s work, with the music being chosen by Manfred Eicher. Eicher founded ECM New Series in 1984 to champion Part’s music; the recordings enshrined on this pair of well-filled discs have now achieved classic contemporary status. Eicher’s selection makes for an extremely satisfying and musically rich experience, getting close to the ‘spirituality’ that characterises so much of Part’s output.
