De l’émotion à la purification
On passera sur le visuel du cd, à tel point « inattendu » que j’ai vu ce disque classé au rayon pop du magasin où je me promenais dernièrement. On passera également sur les illustrations du livret qui semblent traduire la fascination de l’éditeur pour les mains et le crâne parfaitement rasé de l’interprète, captés en communion avec l’élément liquide… Heureusement, le disque, pour peu qu’on accepte le principe du saupoudrage qui visite différents compositeurs, est très réussi, lui. Ces dix pages se focalisent sur un aspect du nouveau genre qui prend son essor au début du 17ème siècle en Italie: l’opéra. Il faut rappeler à ce sujet que, dans l’esprit de ceux qui commencèrent à élaborer ces drames chantés, il n’était justement pas dans leur intention…

Xavier Sabata also lends his counterenor to some obscure composers with Catharsis , a CD devoted to Baroque arias that adhere to and illustrate an Aristotelian concept – specifically the idea of a hero reaching catharsis by having their hybris (arrogance or cruelty) punished by Nemesis, the goddess of retribution, to achieve a purer ethical state. Hence a selection of arias that depict characters at key moments in their personal development, an ultimate example here being Vivaldi’s ‘aria d’ombra’ (shadow aria) from a lost opera Siroe, which he then reused in Farnace: Farnace mistakenly realises he is guilty of infanticide and envisages his own lifeless shadow.
