Within a couple of short years of finishing the Vigil, Rachmaninoff would lose his friend Scriabin (to whom the first performance was dedicated), his father and his country. The Bolshevik regime unpersoned him, and he died in an exile that combined deep nostalgia and unsought fame. The back story might seem to colour the music, but in this interpretation the mystery is suffused with light and space. Charles Bruffy’s reading of the score is unperfumed and direct and the multi-channel sound maintains the individuality of the voices even as it blends them richly. …
