Only the shining quality of the singing and the playing saves this from being renamed ‘A Slog With Ivor Gurney’. It is, in any case, rather dominated by Ralph Vaughan Williams, who is represented by the opening Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and three other substantial works. It’s also named after Judith Bingham’s tribute composition, recorded for the first time here. For some, the real interest will lie in Gurney’s atypical religious setting of Since I believe in God the Father Almighty, originally written for Gloucester Cathedral and with remarkable pauses that were intended to let the church’s acoustics take centre stage.
