The Cetra Verdi Collection is Warner Classics’ contribution to the Verdi year and will eventually include 18 complete operas. Originally issued in the 1940s and 50s, these recordings provide a fascinating insight into a bygone age.
Un giorno de regno (recorded 1951) gets things off to a great start. It’s interesting to hear Verdi’s second opera in a complete recording, and a very pleasing one too. Renato Capecchi and Sesto Bruscantini lead a fine cast with their buffo credentials, and Lina Pagliughi’s sweetness and Laura Cozzi’s tangy tones are beautifully contrasted. Juan Oncina is a tenor of rare grace and Alfredo Simonetto’s conducting also elegant. Thankfully the sound is very good …
