This is a fine CD containing two famous cantatas, Wachet auf, ruftuns die Stimme (BWV 140) and Wir danken dir, Gott (BWV 29), as well as Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt (BWV 112). The team of international soloists gives beautifully stylish accounts of the recitatives and arias, and the well-disciplined orchestra is punctilious in their phrasing and in their treatment of dynamics. There is some splendidly lively solo organ playing in the Sinfonia of BWV 29, with only some approximate trumpet intonation in the background. The opening instrumental ritornello of Wachet auf is perfectly paced. …
