This well-executed programme of music once attributed to Bach – the works recorded were all included in Schmieder’s catalogue, but their authenticity has been subsequently called into question – is worth acquiring by anyone curious about the byways of Bach scholarship. The performances, though, are in no way dry and dusty, but sensitive and expressive. The music is drawn from Schmieder’s appendix – the G major Mass (BWV Anh. 167), Magnificat in C (Anh. 30) and A minor Mass (Anh. 24) – as well as from his main catalogue sequence.
