Many will raise an eyebrow that a 25-year-old chooses to make his CD debut with late Beethoven: the last five sonatas, including the Hammerklavier and the final trilogy, no less. But then Glenn Gould was even younger when he made his second LP, which happened to be opp 109-111, and Levit shares something of his wide-eyed iconoclasm. Levit’s virtuosity is astonishing, not least because it is used solely at the service of the composer, and his beauty and breadth of tone are noteworthy.
