For vol.5 of his complete Buxtehude project, Herrick has chosen this fine new 47-stop Aubertin organ (2010), whose German style suits this music. The 22 different pieces include canzonettas, chorale preludes and praeludia, all played neatly and cleanly with some imaginative touches of improvisation in appropriate places. The choice of Christoph Albrecht’s edition (Barenreiter) is, of course, an interpretation in itself, and there remain other possibilities not only of registration but the disposition between manuals and pedal. Notwithstanding the rather predictable articulation, Herrick evokes some of the grandeur of the large praeludia and the intimacy of some chorale preludes. …
