This is a curiously mixed and unusual recital, though admirably performed, covering a repertoire from Schubert’s Song of the Spirits over the Water (D714) through Wagner’s biblical scena The Feast of Pentecost and Bruckner’s posthumously published Helgoland to Grieg’s robust setting of Landkjen- ning of 1872 written for the restoration of Trondheim cathedral. Debussy’s Invocation, the text not seeming so comfortable for the Lund Singers, was a first attempt to gain the Prix de Rome, and Sibelius made this second transcription of The Captive Queen, originally for mixed voices and orchestra.
