Schumann’s Studies on a Theme by Beethoven has a messy history, detailed here in the notes; this can be the sole reason why these variations on the slow movement of Beethoven’s seventh symphony (including a remarkable intrusion by the ninth!) are not better known. The Ghost Variations are better known, but we also have the brief Chopin Variations (based on Op 15/3) and a set of Schubert variations which opens, bizarrely, with the preamble from Carnaval. along with a handful of fragments, shorter works and discarded movements, this is a fascinating collection well played if in rather dry sound. …
