This makes for an attractive collection of works by a trio of composers active in Vienna at the time of Haydn and Mozart. Indeed, both Johann Baptist Wanhal (Va?hal) and Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf were members of the celebrated string quartet that included their more famous colleagues. The finest composer of the trio is the Bohemian-born Wanhal, here represented by one of his best symphonies, an intense and dramatic work in A minor (Bryan a2), an appealing Violin Concerto in B flat, and a brief Requiem in E flat, probably written in memory of the composer’s mother, and a work that touches by dint of its extreme simplicity, the choral writing …
