Intelligence and beauty go hand in hand in this thoroughly musical re-creation of a Mass that contrasts renaissance settings with choral works of the 20th century framed by apposite organ solos. The result is surprisingly coherent and satisfying, with pristine vocal contributions by Marktoberdorf ‘s Carl Orff Choir duly differentiating between old and new, and Peter Bader’s organ playing offering eloquent support. The choir’s mixed voices are beautifully blended, luminously so in Lasso’s Agnus Dei, Ko Matsushita’s vital Pater Noster and Eric Whitacre’s Alleluia.
