Until the appearance of the editions by John Rutter and Denis Arnold in the early 1980s, the Fauré Requiem was largely known as a full-scale concert work for large choir and orchestra. David Hill has pared the work back to violin, cello, organ and harp to offer an even more transparent sound than we are accustomed to, which may well be of practical use to good church and chamber choirs with limited instrumental resources. This does mean that the organ has to provide a lot more colour than is usual; but it is in constant supply from Robert Bennesh on this disc.
