It is a shame that what is explicitly a tribute to two inspirational musicians of the past is so roundly eclipsed by those figures themselves. Britten and Rostropovich recorded all four works on the current disc (see CM nov 2013) and, if their Arpeggione sonata is a touch self-indulgent, their accounts of the other works are genuine classics. Although in much better sound than the 1960s Decca recordings, Capucon cannot match the great Russian for scale and sensitivity, nor Braley Britten for imagination or sense of colour. …
