This is a fine selection of Frescobaldi’s keyboard works, played on three historic but relatively little-known Italian organs. Music includes the Missa della Madonna from Fiori musicali (but, sadly, without the alternatim plainchant), capriccios, fantasias, ricercars, canzonas and partitas from the 1615, 1624 and 1627 publications. A welcome addition are the motets Deus noster and Ipsi sum desponsata from Frescobaldi’s second book of Sacrarum modulationum (1627), and the entrancing sound of the cornet is heard in the Ricercar con obligo di cantare la quinta parte in the Mass. Foccroulle is thoroughly conversant with the organs and the musical style – beautifully played. …
