in Choir & Organ (Jul, 2015)
This recording of the huge Walcker in Riga Dom captures the sheer scale of both organ and building extremely well. The popular Bach Prelude & Fugue in D, BWV 532 is framed by little-known works: preludes and fugues by Glazunov, Karatygin, Catoire and Goedicke, ranging from 1906 to 1925. The Karatygin, based on a Russian folk tune, shows off the beautiful quiet registers, while the two Goedicke works are perhaps most impressive, showing the full scale of this magnificent instrument. As expected from the 2009 St Albans competition winner, Volostnov plays with authority and panache, and is to be commended for bringing this rarely played music to a wider audience. …
