Marking the 500th anniversary of Isaac’s death, Jordi Savall traces the Flemish composer’s progress through the drama, political turbulence and artistic vitality of the times through his and others’ music. Gorgeous instrumental colours, with brass and viols on fine form, and plenty of bells and whistles (well, flutes), abound. The choir, of veiled vocal quality, appears to greatest effect in plangent works such as Poliziano’s Lamentation Quis dabit capiti meo aquam? The solo ensembles are not uniformly convincing but it’s an excellent hybrid SACD recording and another beautifully packaged production of imagination, originality, and impeccable research from the Catalan maestro. …
