Austrian composer Herzogenberg was a life-long friend of Brahms whom he met in the 1860s, and resident in Leipzig he founded the Bach Society there in 1874 with Philipp Spitta. A professor of composition at the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin, Herzogenberg’s musical language was much influenced by the leading composers of the 19th century. This disc of unaccompanied sacred and secular choral music offers a useful introduction to this area of his output. The secular items include settings of poets favoured by the lieder composers of his time – Morike, Goethe, Ruckert and Eichendorff, while the sacred pieces reveal his interest in Schutz and Bach.
