Overshadowed by Hansel und Gretel, Konigskinder has only a slight foothold in the repertoire. What a shame, as it’s a beautiful work with some ravishing music, but perhaps its length and truly miserable ending have prevented its charms from being fully appreciated. Frankfurt’s production, recorded live in 2012, is a fine performance. Sebastian Weigle’s conducting is sensitive to both pacing the piece and accommodating his performers: orchestra and chorus are on their very fine best form, by which I mean, world-class.
