Is het ensceneren van de Passies van Bach waanzin of godslasterend? Peter Sellars en Simon Rattle maken er geen spetterend spektakel van maar veel eerder een ritueel, waarbij artiesten zich met hart en ziel uitleveren aan en opgaan in een “gemeenschappelijkheid” van een bijna ondraaglijke schoonheid, die ons naar de keel grijpt en overrompelt.

The Berlin Philharmonic’s video recording of Bach’s St John Passion, made at the Berlin Philharmonie earlier this year and supplied here on two DVDs and a Blu-ray disc, is a shocker.

The Passion was staged by Peter Sellars, and conducted by Simon Rattle. I have seen many of Sellars’s opera productions and have been impressed by his humanity, musicality and commitment to story-telling on stage. The fact that many of his productions involve the characters (and, powerfully, the chorus) engaging in choreographed and synchronised gestures is now almost a cliché, and the technique of mass emoting naturally applies itself – for better or worse – to Bach’s Passions.
