This fine CD from St John’s College, Cambridge, unites three 20th-century religious works: Masses by Poulenc and Kodály, and a setting of the Lord’s Prayer by Janác?ek. In his Mass in G (1937) Poulenc, the archetypal saint-sinner, happily mixes the two sides of his musical personality. It here receives a superb reading from Nethsingha and his forces. Kodály’s more substantial Missa Brevis (1944) is equally well served in the warm St John’s College acoustics which these musicians know all too well. Janác?ek’s setting of the Lord’s Prayer was originally made in 1901 but revised in 1906 with organ and harp accompaniment, here sensitively realised by the excellent Glen Dempsey and Anne …
