I was always attracted to the huge 1891 Schyven organ at Antwerp Cathedral; from the vast nave, it imparted a sense of enormous grandeur without ever being truly loud. Its technical shortcomings were well known, however, and the recent lengthy restoration by Schumacher has included moving the entire organ forward and rearranging significant parts of the layout. This is the first recording since its re-inauguration, and while the effect in the flesh is impossible to determine, it at least sounds in fine health. Appropriately, the latest in Peter Van de Velde’s survey of Flemish 19th- and 20th-century organ music features music by Joseph Callaerts, the organ’s first titulaire. There are no …
