The next generation of composers includes Joseph-Hector Fiocco of Brussels, whose Petits motets vol.2 continues Scherzi Musicali’s dedicated exploration of his delightful, little-heard, irrepressibly Italianate sacred music in a well-filled disc. Four virtuoso voices, matched by sprightly playing from the excellent ten-piece band, shine in a recording of exemplary clarity and balance. That disc asks if Fiocco might justly be called ‘the Handel of Brussels’, but here’s the real thing: My Soul Sees and Hears!, the debut album from Houston Baroque, interweaves Handel and Buxtehude in an original and well-constructed programme focusing on their Lutheranism, their links with Hamburg, and emphasising the organ.
