in Opera Now (Sep, 2015)
Keeping with French rarities, Ferdinand Herold’s opera comique Le Pre aux Clercs is newly issued on CD from a 1959 French radio broadcast. The dialogue is omitted, but the frothy music bubbles along under Robert Benedetti’s conducting, and the cast, stalwarts of the Opera Comique, is excellent. Diction is crystalline, and the voices, though light, have a forward placement that is a relative rarity today even among Francophone singers. It’s fun all the way. The sound is generally good, and there are some worthwhile extras. If you’re going to the Wexford Festival this autumn to see this opera then do invest in this to whet your appetite. …
