This CD is a feast of gloriously weaving polyphony set amid chorale-like passages. Lechner, a pupil of Orlando di Lasso, carries on his teacher’s work to stunning effect with these varied sacred settings. The addition of delicate instrumental touches – bells, drums, Jew’s harps, wind chimes, recorder, organ and the Mediterranean sounds of the sansula and koshis – enhances the overall effect. The singing of the gifted Athesinus Consort is sublime as the lines of music are individually expressed and phrased, with not a nuance out of place. The recording quality is a model of clarity and balance. A must for all lovers of 16th-century polyphony. …
