in Opera Now (Jul, 2018)
There’s rather less exciting conducting from Plácido Domingo in Don Giovanni in Prague, marking the 230th anniversary of the opera’s premiere in the Estates Theatre. Good detail is undermined by lack of tension, and Jir?í Nekvasil’s traditional production doesn’t ramp things up. Neither does Simone Alberghini’s unexciting Giovanni. Irina Lunghu tries as Donna Anna but the voice is occasionally wayward; Katerina Knežiková’s Elvira is secure but one-dimensional. Dmitry Korchak is a fine Ottavio, while Adrian Sampetrean’s naturalistic acting sticks out for being too good. …
