This attractive programme of three of Mozart’s Salzburg church pieces, with the addition of one of the organ Epistle Sonatas in the C major Mass correctly positioned between the Gloria and the Credo, is more appetizing in prospect than in reality. Carwood delivers tidy accounts of the works, the quartet of soloists well balanced (men better than the women), and the orchestra (one suspects an ad hoc group formed for the occasion – the liner booklet gives no information) stylish. The main problem lies with the choir, whose boy choristers too frequently experience imperfect intonation. This problem also affects soprano Lynda Russell in the ‘Alleluia’ of the Regina caeli. …
