Organist emeritus of York Minster, John Scott Whiteley accompanied the services there for 35 years until 2010; Thomas Tertius Noble was Minster organist for 15 years till, in 1912, he took up the reins at St Thomas, Fifth Avenue, New York. Noble’s time-line gave him insight into late-19th-century organs by Walker, Lewis and Hill – and then the world of E.M. Skinner, which pedigrees are reflected in his music. Interesting, too, are the insightful biographical notes and the dedicatees listed in his catalogue. This first volume makes for surprising and varied listening, musically rewarding throughout, played with passion and precision by Whiteley on the great IV/88 instrument he knows so well. …
