This celebration of the Easter Mass, still a sumptuous occasion in the early 17th century, is compiled from sources extant at the time of Praetorius’s term as chapel master at Wolfenbuttel, the Introit and Sequence from Motectae et Psalmi latini of 1607 and much of the rest of the Latin Mass text from the Missodia collection of 1611. The German Gospel texts and chorales come from Musae Sioniae (1607) and the hymn Vita sanctorum, in place of a sermon, from Hymnodia of 1611. This is a splendid and careful performance with clarity of period instrumental colour and detail. …
