Countertenor Franco Fagioli offers us Rossini, a collection of arias written for women, but all of whom are sung by male characters such as Arsace (in Semiramide) and Tancredi. Like Crebassa, he delves enthusiastically into the obscure, giving us arias from Demetrio e Polibio and Eduardo e Cristina. Fagioli’s technical skill is without doubt and he can fling offthe most challenging coloratura with aplomb. His tone is sometimes shrill, but every time one wishes for some variation in vocal colour he provides it, just avoiding monotony.
