In Germany the period between Bach and Mendelssohn is generally not seen as one of distinction for the organ. A few organist-composers endeavoured to maintain the J.S. Bach tradition including Schneider, a highly regarded teacher of the time. Halgeir Schiager has been careful to present these works as faithfully as possible (albeit on two modern instruments). The smaller pieces and variations may not be terribly interesting but in the dramatic opener Dank und Jubelpraludium (with its homage to JSB) and the two Fantasie und Fuges Opus 1 and 3, the writing is every bit as strong as in Mendelssohn’s Sonatas. …
