Piano International (Jan, 2012)
After the success of his debut solo album with Onyx (a juxtaposition of works by Brahms and Schoenberg, highlighted as an IP Choice disc in Nov/Dec 2010, issue 4), Shai Wosner’s next move has been hotly anticipated by the piano world. For his follow-up recording, Wosner has chosen to focus on works by Schubert that incorporate elements of folk music. The C major sonata (D840, ‘Reliquie’) is performed with a powerful touch that is, dare I say, far too heavy-handed, at least for this writer’s tastes.
