Valentin Silvestrov’s eclecticism allows him to put techniques from renaissance choral music side by side with Debussy, Poulenc and elements of the avant-garde. The harmonies are occasionally quite complex, as on the Two Sacred Chants from 2006, but there is still a faintly saccharine quality to some of the writing, and to a degree that one wonders if Silvestrov is still indulging in some kind of Shostakovich-like code, burying his darker message under a light exterior. If so, the Latvian singers ‘get it’, giving these pieces a shimmer of darkness even under the glow of Alleluia (also 2006) and the lovely 1995 Diptych that contains Silvestrov’s setting of the Lord’s Prayer. …
