The sixth volume of this series is dedicated to the Victorian organists Alfred Hollins, Herbert Walton, William Wolstenholme, Walter Henry Goss-Custard and his brother Reginald. As ever, these recordings give great insight into the performance of music from this period. While Hollins’s Handel may not appeal to modern tastes, Herbert Walton’s Bach (Gigue Fugue) is full of vigour and articulation. In fact, all the other performances are full of energy and musical direction, always expressive yet never over-sentimental. There is much to enjoy here, especially when the restored Welte instrument is so well captured, with great expression and warm colours. …
