Be very thankful for this DVD. If you had actually waited twenty-something years to obtain Bayreuth tickets and then spent a small fortune in attending, I suspect your fury would know no bounds. For this is the controversial Hans Neuenfels production featuring rats. So, to be blunt, you would have waited twenty years to see giant pink rodents warble ‘Here comes the bride’. Arguably, the production is so simplistic that it is almost opera for idiots: you can certainly spot the goodies and baddies from the word go, but at times the imagery baffles.
