While learning my trade in the 1970s, I experienced historically informed performances bristling with the thrill of novelty and the enterprise of musicians whose passion often exceeded technique. nowadays we expect everything to be finely tuned and well-behaved; yet, occasionally, I regret the loss of the febrile eccentricity of those experimental days of the early music revival. while listening to Codex Chantilly II I was struck by the high polish and refinement of Tetraktys as they sing and play this most courtly of 14th-century material, beautifully recorded in the Pieve d’Arezzo.
