The new Telemann disc from the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin includes fine versions of the concertos for three horns and for three trumpets mentioned above (TWV 54:D2, TWV 54:D3). In both cases the Akademie capture the music’s grandeur admirably – though I just about prefer La Stagione’s brass soloists for their scintillating edge. Two works on this disc stand out for their (even more) unusual instrumentation. The delightful concerto in B minor (TWV 53:h1) is scored for two flutes and calchedon, a kind of baroque lute, also known as a galizona, that Telemann employs here as a plucked bass instrument.
