This complete recording of the Mendelssohn Sonatas is valuable for the early 19th-century German organ colours that Benjamin Righetti has chosen, quite different from contemporaneous English sounds. Righetti plays well and with imagi- native registrations on the 60-stop 1834 organ, although occasionally he is pedantic, as in the opening of no.6; but elsewhere he has command both for musical detail and long-range structure. In the booklet, Righetti has written an essay beginning ‘Why produce a CD…?’, in a pseudo-philosophical manner, but some information about Mendelssohn, the sonatas and the organ would have been more interesting and relevant. …
