Cantata 198, Lass, Fürstin, lass noch einen Strahl, was composed for the memorial service in 1727 of Christiane Eberhardine, the staunchly Protestant wife of the Elector of Saxony, some of the music being re-used for the St Mark Passion in 1731. The alto aria Schlage doch, gewünschte Stunde, BWV 53, was thought to be by Bach but is now attributed to Georg Melchior Hoffmann. BWV 1083, Tilge, Höchster, is Bach’s very successful arrangement of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, now set to the words of Psalm 51. All the music is sung and played to the highest degree of excellence.
