Bob Chilcott has an established reputation for singable but challenging music that shows a considerable respect for text and thematic nuance. The ‘environmental cantata’ that occupies the second BBC disc manages to be highly personal in focus and yet universal in import, a quality that has begun to attract European and north American choirs and conductors to his work. Nicol Matt perhaps gives the Songs and Cries of London Town too precise an articulation, but one doesn’t want to go down the Dick Van Dyke route with music as cleverly balanced as this between vernacular and classical. Similarly The Making of the Drum, which could so easily drift into ethnomusicological pomposity. …
