The live recording of Knabenchor Hannover’s 400th anniversary tribute to Monteverdi’s 1610 Marienvesper is less satisfactory: to my ears, the boys and youths of the Knabenchor, while clearly working their collective socks off, are neither as idiomatically Italian in their delivery of the text nor as vocally mature as one might wish. nevertheless, enhanced by the specialist Schola Himlische Cantorey, a team of refined soloists from Vox Werdensis and the highly experienced instrumentalists of Concerto Palatino and Musica Alta Ripa, much of this energetic performance is arresting and the recording has vivid perspective. …
