Born in the same year as Reger, Rudolf Tobias is considered to be the first real Estonian composer, though his musical education was in St Petersburg and he later became a German citizen. He outlived Reger by two years, and their partnership in this recording is appropriate by stylistic contrast, Tobias more backward- looking than his contrapuntally adventurous contemporary; yet the moving meditation on Nun ruhen alle Walder is worth adding to any organist’s repertoire. Daniel Reuss, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir’s chief conductor, brings breadth and clarity to this enterprising recording which, for many, is a welcome introduction to some less familiar choral works. …
