Brave repertoire and spirited singing from the BBC ensemble and soloists. The two-act The Death of Baldur is the central item and the most obviously dramatic, but Hughes’s music always arrests attention: even when he is meditating on swans, or setting one of e.e. cummings’s meaningful nonsense poems, or constructing a medieval bestiary, he sounds alert to nuance and the natural pitching of English words. The title piece is one of a pair of choral fanfares. Paul Brough marshals the sound beautifully. …
