The authentic voice of Russian liturgical music is a challenge for Brits to emulate: there’s the unique timbre of Church Slavonic, an undefinable quality of melancholy and a visceral richness which only the real thing fully delivers. Tenebrae gets closer than many another Anglo-Saxon outfit in majestic interpretations with a beautiful bloom on the recorded sound and, while the upper voices have a suspiciously, deliciously clean blend, some sepulchral basses get genuinely down and dirty with this powerful collection of works by Gretchaninov, Rachmaninoff, Golovanov, Chesnokov, Kalinnikov, Hedrov and Tchaikovsky, all well worth a wallow. …
